Sex Calculator — Calories Burned During Sexual Activity

Like any physical activity, sexual activity burns calories — the amount depends on body weight, duration and effort level. This calculator uses MET (metabolic equivalent of task) values to estimate energy expenditure and compare it to other common activities.

Como esta calculadora funciona?

Calories = MET × weight (kg) × time (h). MET for sexual activity ranges from 1.3 (light) to 5.8 (vigorous); typical moderate activity is ~3.0 MET. A 70 kg person in a 24-minute moderate session burns about 84 kcal — similar to a brisk walk for the same duration. Research average: ~101 kcal (men) / ~69 kcal (women).

Fórmula
kcal = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours) • MET: light = 1.3, moderate = 3.0, vigorous = 5.8
How this is calculated

The MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) system standardises physical activity intensity by expressing energy expenditure as a multiple of resting metabolic rate (RMR). One MET equals approximately 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour — the energy burned sitting quietly. Activities are assigned MET values from Ainsworth's Compendium of Physical Activities, which classifies sexual activity at 1.3 MET (passive) through 5.8 MET (very vigorous, code 19030 in the 2011 edition). Multiplying MET × body weight in kg × duration in hours gives kilocalories burned.

A 2013 study by Frappier et al. (PLOS ONE) measured energy expenditure in 21 couples using accelerometers and found that sexual activity burned an average of 101 kcal for men and 69 kcal for women per session (mean session ~24 minutes), equivalent to about 3–4 kcal/min — broadly consistent with a moderate MET of ~3. The actual range was wide (52–306 kcal for men), reflecting real variation in effort, position and individual physiology.

This calculator produces a gross calorie estimate — it does not subtract the resting metabolic rate. For a net figure (extra calories beyond doing nothing), subtract your RMR contribution for the same period. The result is an approximation: MET values are population averages, and individual variation, hormonal differences and body composition all affect actual expenditure.

Perguntas frequentes

Research by Frappier et al. (2013) found an average of about 101 kcal per session for men and 69 kcal for women, over a mean session of 24 minutes. At moderate intensity (3 MET) a 70 kg person burns roughly 60 kcal per 24 minutes. The range is wide — effort, duration and body weight all matter.

Sex qualifies as moderate-intensity physical activity (2–6 MET range) comparable to a brisk walk or light cycling. However, an average session is short, so the total calorie burn is modest — typically 50–150 kcal — and it does not replace dedicated aerobic exercise for cardiovascular fitness. It still contributes positively to daily physical activity.

Light (1.3 MET) covers passive or resting-type activity. Moderate (3.0 MET) reflects typical activity as found in research studies. Vigorous (5.8 MET) matches the Ainsworth Compendium's highest category for sexual activity. When in doubt, moderate is the most widely-used research estimate.
