How this is calculated
The Apnea-Hypopnea Index is computed directly from a polysomnography (sleep study) report. An apnea is a complete cessation of airflow lasting at least 10 seconds; a hypopnea is a partial reduction in airflow (≥30%) accompanied by an arousal from sleep or a drop in blood-oxygen saturation. Both event counts come from the scored sleep study. Total sleep time is the net sleep duration measured during the study, also taken from the report.
Dividing the combined event count by sleep time in hours gives AHI in units of events per hour. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) classifies AHI as follows: fewer than 5 events per hour is normal in adults; 5–14 is mild obstructive sleep apnea; 15–29 is moderate; 30 or more is severe. Paediatric thresholds differ — one event per hour is the cut-off for children.
This calculator uses the AASM 2012 hypopnea scoring rule (30% airflow reduction with ≥3% desaturation or arousal). Some labs use an alternative definition requiring ≥4% desaturation, which yields a lower AHI for the same night. Always read the AHI alongside your oxygen desaturation index (ODI) and the clinical context — the AHI alone does not determine treatment.

For adults, an AHI below 5 events per hour is considered normal. An AHI of 5–14 indicates mild sleep apnea, 15–29 indicates moderate, and 30 or more indicates severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
They appear on the summary page of your polysomnography or home sleep test report, usually listed as "total apneas," "total hypopneas," and "total sleep time." Your sleep specialist should provide this report after your study.
AHI is a key metric but treatment depends on symptoms, oxygen desaturation levels, cardiac risk, and patient preference. Mild AHI with few symptoms may be managed conservatively; moderate-to-severe AHI typically warrants CPAP, oral appliance, or surgery. Consult a sleep medicine specialist.
