¿Cómo funciona esta calculadora?
DRIs are NIH/IOM reference values for daily nutrient intake — RDA (meets 97–98% of population needs) or AI (estimated adequate). Protein is 0.8 g/kg body weight; vitamin D increases to 800 IU at age 71+; iron drops for post-menopausal women. Values are for healthy, non-pregnant individuals (2019–2020 update).

How this is calculated
Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are a set of reference values published by the National Academies of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine) and used by the US and Canadian governments. This calculator displays the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) — the daily intake level sufficient for 97–98% of healthy individuals — or the Adequate Intake (AI) when no RDA has been established (fibre, potassium, sodium).
Protein needs scale with body mass. The RDA of 0.8 g per kilogram of body weight is the standard minimum; the calculator shows whichever is higher — the group RDA or your weight-based value. All other values come directly from the 2019–2020 NIH DRI tables and vary by age group and sex. Notable changes at older ages include increased vitamin D (from 600 IU to 800 IU at 71+), increased calcium for women from 51+ (1000→1200 mg), and decreased iron for post-menopausal women (18→8 mg).
These are general population reference values, not personalised medical advice. Pregnant and lactating women have significantly higher needs not shown here. People with chronic conditions, athletes, vegans, and those over 65 may need amounts that differ from these baselines — consult a registered dietitian or physician for individual guidance. Values reflect the 2019–2020 sodium/potassium update and the 2011 vitamin D/calcium report.
Preguntas frecuentes
The RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) is the daily intake sufficient to meet the needs of 97–98% of healthy people in a group, established from scientific evidence. The AI (Adequate Intake) is used when data are insufficient to set an RDA — it is an approximation believed to be adequate. Fibre, potassium, and sodium use AI values here.
The protein RDA is defined as 0.8 g per kilogram of body weight per day. Group RDA values (e.g. 56 g for adult men) are calculated using a reference body weight, so a heavier person needs more. This calculator shows the higher of the group RDA or your weight-specific value.
No. Pregnancy and lactation substantially increase the needs for protein, folate, iron, calcium, vitamin D, and many other nutrients. The values shown here are for non-pregnant, non-lactating females. Consult a registered dietitian or midwife for pregnancy-specific DRIs.
